Social Media Validation: How Many Likes Does it Take for Me to Feel Loved?

If you are on your social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) or contemplating what to say for your next post on social media for more than 30 minutes a day, you should start to do some prioritizing. Watch the time when you embark on another swipe into updates of your friends' lives. It ticks by so fast that you realize two or three hours later that you have wasted so much time. I am not saying I've never done that because I can definitely be an internet junkie sometimes. But one of my biggest concerns for anyone living today, young and old, is that we are addicted and need another hit of "love" from Facebook or Instagram too often.

We compare ourselves to the seemingly perfect lives of those we follow, even though everyone fights a battle sometime in their life, though they might not display it publicly. 

We need to feel validated by the amount of likes our pictures or clever statuses get.

Our lives begin to be shaped and gain excitement from a digital thumbs up. 


When you stop seeking attention and affirmation from other people, start giving it to yourself.

When you find contentment and love from yourself, the need to have the most followers or likes on social media dissolves. 

Take it from someone who has been there before. Once I decided to barely post and start to love myself despite what others thought or how many likes I got, I realized my self-worth and gained solid confidence in myself.

Start loving yourself. 
Stop posting just to get validation.
Start allowing yourself to put the smartphone down or put your computer to sleep and THINK:
  • What do I need to improve in myself?
  • How can I replace my negative thoughts with positive thoughts?
  • What do I take for granted?
  • What am I thankful for?
  • What other things could I use this time to do?
  • Who can I serve today?
  • Who needs to be reminded that I love them?
I'm not saying social media is of the devil. It surely isn't. I use it daily. But it can get out of hand. So, it's time to use it in moderation. Keep up with distant friends and family, maybe post a little something and then be off of it.

I challenge you to try it out and see. Start loving yourself. When you truly begin that process, your days will get brighter, you will feel more happiness surrounding you. And once you start giving that happiness away, it will find its way back to you.
